Day 23: June 17 London

Day 23, 2012. Sunday

Happy Father's Day to those of you who are fathers,

We started out our morning With a celebration for Pete and Neil. Pete got presents, and all poor Neil is getting is a trip to London. Pete called a taxi for us which picked us up at 8:20. AM. It took 8 minutes to get us to Central Station. There was a detour, so it took one minute more than Pete said it would.

We got a mocha to share and sat and waited for our train to come in. As soon as it came in people started boarding before it was posted on the big board. We headed for our car as soon as the track was posted. We were in car H, seats 16 and 17. We were a long way down the train since there were cars lettered A thru G and then U and then H. We had first class tickets in a quiet car. The car was fairly empty for a long time...it was very nice. Eventually we gained a table mate...a very tall fellow who was either playing footsie with me or just had really long legs and big feet. Since he was a member of the clergy, we will assume the later.

The train ride was uneventful and fairly quick..about 4 and a half hours to London from Glasgow. The scenery is pretty...farmlands and villages with a couple of larger cities thrown in. Since this was an express train there were many fewer stops. We arrived at London Euston Station exactly on time. As usual we let the speediest get off first.

We walked from Euston to Kings Cross to get the underground to Victoria. As we got on the tube train we saw the map....the next stop....Euston. Okay, we obviously did that wrong. We got to Victoria without further ado. We walked from the station to Belgravia Road. We found Easy Hotel quite easily. It was a couple of blocks closer to Victoria than the hotel we stayed in during our 2010 visit.

We checked in without much fanfare. The young lady at the desk issued our key and our two tv remotes...one for one day and one for four days. We had to pay extra for the tv. We also paid for a window. We were given one of the larger rooms. We have room for our luggage. We went to our room on some floor.... It is one flight of stairs up from the street level. Our room is Spartan to say the least. There is the window. There is a small tv attached to the wall. There are two hooks for hanging things. There is a double bed with two pillows which they got as cast offs from Amtrak in the States. There is a very nice duvet. The mattress while not the most luxurious is far from the worst that I have ever slept on. The bathroom is a small pod ..4 feet by. 3 feet. The shower is a mere three inches from the toilet. It is hilarious. Easy hotel.com is emblazoned on the mirror and the bathroom door. One wall of the room is bright orange. The other three are a pale peach. There is no other furniture in the room. However, easy hotel.com. Has the greatest bath towels ever...even better than Queen Mary 2 or even my own house.

After we dumped our luggage we walked to Buckingham Palace. We waited for her majesty to invite us in for tea. No invite, so we went to St. James Park and bought a Coke and watched the swan.

We walked back to easyhotel.com. I forgot to mention that the hotel is air conditioned unlike a lot of more expensive places.
