Day 16. Sunday June 10

Sunday June 10, 2012
The 16th Day of our second European adventure

Jan and Bonnie had indicated some stops on the bus that they would like to investigate further, so that was our goal. We walked to the tour bus stop on Beyer’s Road in the rain and boarded the bus, wisely we sat inside. Our first stop was to be the cathedral, but as services were being held and it was closed to tourists we made the people’s palace our first stop. Pictures of the Victoria fountain that this morning was shooting water all around while we waited five minutes for the museum to open. The museum is a social history of Glasgow. We looked at exhibits on housing, on the War years and the bombing of Glasgow. We then met Jan and Bonnie and headed downstairs into the conservatory for lunch, Backed by palm trees we had a sandwich and carrot cake.
Then we took the bus for a trip to Saint Mungo’s cathedral, the only catholic cathedral to survive the Reformation in Scotland. It was begun in the 1100’s and while no part of the original building survives the parts that do survive are from the 1200’s and 1300’s so it is an old building. The arches are stupendous . We could go to the lower level and see the tomb of the saint, which we did. There were also diagrams of what was built when which were bewildering. An added benefit to our visit was that for a time the organ was being played—it filled the huge interior space with sound. We took the bus to St. Enoch’s, a shopping center, and did a small bit of shopping, then back to the west end for a chicken saandwich dinner with Pete and Jess. We played with Joey, had dinner and sent Jan and Bonnie down the hill to their hotel. Another wonderful day in Glasgow.
